Origins of Softball

A Rainy Day Spawns a New Sport

The history of softball dates back to Thanksgiving Day in 1887. A group of men had gathered at the Farragut Boat Club in Chicago, Illinois, to hear the results of the Yale vs.

Harvard football game. When it was announced that Yale had won, a Yale supporter playfully threw a boxing glove at a Harvard fan.

The Harvard fan swung a broom handle at the glove, and thus, the idea of softball was born.

George Hancock: The Father of Softball

George Hancock, a reporter for the Chicago Board of Trade, is credited with inventing softball. He saw the potential in the improvised game and decided to create a set of rules and equipment for this new sport.

Hancock used a boxing glove as the ball and a broom handle as the bat. He marked off a small baseball diamond inside the Farragut Boat Club’s gym, with chalk lines for bases and foul lines.

Softball’s Early Years

Initially called “indoor baseball,” softball was primarily an indoor sport played in gymnasiums and armories.

Due to its adaptability, it quickly spread to other cities and became popular as an outdoor sport as well.

In the early years, the sport went by various names, including “kitten ball,” “pumpkin ball,” and “diamond ball.”

Standardization of Rules

As the sport grew in popularity, it became necessary to standardize the rules. In 1923, the Joint Rules Committee on Softball was established, which later became the International Softball Federation (ISF).

The ISF played a significant role in developing and promoting the sport worldwide.

Softball gained popularity among women in the early 20th century. The sport provided an opportunity for women to engage in competitive physical activity, which was often limited in those times.

During World War II, women’s softball leagues flourished as a form of recreation and entertainment for factory workers and military personnel.

Women’s Softball in the Olympics

Women’s fastpitch softball made its Olympic debut in the 1996 Atlanta Games. The sport remained an Olympic event until 2008 but was later dropped.

After a long campaign, softball was reinstated for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
